British Industry Body BGC Launches Game to Combat Illegal Gambling Sites

Earlier this month a UK reputable body, The Betting and Gaming Council (BGC), launched a highly useful interactive tool to support players in knowing the difference between legitimate gambling websites and illegal operators. This innovative tool is part of a wider initiative in cracking down on the increasing number of black operators cropping up in the UK.

Helping players stay informed

The tool takes the form of an interactive game called “Spot The Black Market” and tests users to identify between real legitimate gaming operators, and illegal “black market” websites. Users are presented with a series of questions, such as mock pages without the official UKGC logo, dodgy payment methods and unfavourable terms and conditions.

Industry experts have warned unlicensed sites are becoming incredibly sophisticated and similar in style to the real deal. They often imitate the design and popular features of renowned brands to trick players into parting with their cash. A BGC spokesperson described the interactive game as a really practical tool, showing everyday consumers just how easily scammers can mislead them.

Supporting the regulated sector

The UK adheres to very strict standards and safety protocols, and the BGC notes these sham sites pose a significant risk to the public because they don’t comply with such measures. They offer no player protection tools such as self exclusion, limits, safer gambiing support and operate fully off the radar from the UK economy, avoiding taxes.

In contrast, the BGC also emphasised the economic value of the regulated sector, which contributes around £6.8 billion to the UK economy each year and supports approximately 109,000 jobs. Fully licensed operators also generate £4 billion in tax revenue and play a crucial role in funding British sports.
