Baccarat (pronounced as BAH-kah-rah, forget the T) is an extremely popular game of luck in land-based and online casinos in the world. Baccarat is considered to be a rather posh game, which is mostly loved by high-rollers and Asian players in particular. Baccarat is also known Punto Banco, which means Player and Banker, the two hands you can bet on in this simple but elegant card game. The word Baccarat is the French spelling for the Italian baccara, which means zero referring to the point values of face cards.
Baccarat has a certain appeal to it since it’s so easy to learn the rules and there is not that much strategy involved in it. With Baccarat the only real strategic decision that you can make is how much you are willing to bet and which hand to choose.
Let’s have a look at Baccarat rules and card values to see how to go about this game to get some edge and increase your chances of winning.
Baccarat Card values
Cards in Baccarat game have the following values:
- Aces count as 1
- Tens, Jacks, Queens and Kings count as 0
- The number cards from 2 to 9 have their nominal face value.
Total hand values can only be from 0 to 9 because since the 10 is always subtracted from any total of more than 9. If the player has 5-8-3, the total will be 6 and not 16. 9+5 becomes 4 and not 14. 20 becomes zero.
The object of the Baccarat
The object of the Baccarat Game is for the winning hand to get as close to 9 as possible.
When the game starts two hands are dealt – one hand for the Banker and one hand for the Player. Not to be confused by these names, you can actually bet on any hand since "Banker" hand, in reality, has nothing to do with the casino, and the "Player" hand has nothing to do with you as a player. You can also decide to bet on a Tie.
House edge in Baccarat
Baccarat is well-known for being a game of pure luck, but you can at least take some figures into account when making your bets. Betting on Player hand has a house edge of 1.24% while betting on Banker's hand has an edge of 1.06%. There is also a possibility to bet on a tie between Banker and Player, but this means a massive 14.4% house edge. The simplest tip that most experts give on Baccarat is always to bet on Banker since it has the lowest house advantage.
The Natural Win in Baccarat
When the first two cards are dealt, if one hand gets the total points of 8 or 9 for the Player or the Banker this will make a so-called natural win and the game will finish. Bets that have already been placed will be cashed out.
If no one has 8 or 9 then it’s time to determine whether the player will get the third card. The Player will stand on a total of 6 or 7. On any other total from 0 to 5, the Player gets one more card and the totals are counted again.
