Pai Gow – how to play Pai Gow online

What is Pai Gow

Pai Gow is a rather simple card game. Pai Gow Poker is, in essence, an Americanized version of the Chinese domino game of Pai Gow. Today you can play Pai Gow Poker in practically every respected online casino on the UK market. It’s a low risk, slow-temp classic casino card games that players all over the world enjoy a lot. We recommend trying Pai Gow if you love card games but want to try something different apart from the classics such as Blackjack, Poker or Baccarat.

Rules of Pai Gow

Pai Gow is played with a typical 52 card deck and an addition of one Joker. The core of the rules is based on classic Poker hand combinations. There are normally 6 players and a dealer participating in the game, and it all starts with serving the deal.

The dealer shuffles and deals 7 cards face down to each of the six players and to himself. Four cards remain unused and stay in the deck.

From the cards that players receive they create 2 hands – the big or back hand, which is a standard poker 5 card hand and a small or front hand made up out of 2 cards and it can only be a pair or a combination of high cards. A couple of rules you should remember is that the bigger hand should always outrank the 2 card hand. Apart from that, the Joker can either substitute for any suit to form a flush or a straight. In all the other cases and always in 2 card hands Joker can only be used as an Ace.

Once all the players have formed their two hands, the cards are being exposed and compared directly to the hands of the dealer. From there you have 3 possible outcomes.

  1. Both you hands are better than the dealer's - you get the amount that you staked from the dealer
  2. One of your hands is better than the dealer's – that’s a push.
  3. Both dealer's hands are better than yours – you lose your bet.

Tips on Playing Pai Gow online

The only strategy you can employ when playing Pai Gow is how to separate the two card hands. The idea is to make at least one hand stronger than the dealer’s so you don’t lose money. Some experts suggest making the 2 card hand as strong as possible without, of course, outranking the 5 card hand.

However if you can see that you can make a very strong 5 card hand starting from a straight and going up, then it’s better to stick to it, since that hand will most certainly be a winner.
