It's uncommon not to have heard about the Mega Millions lottery nowadays; with its mega jackpots famous for transforming ordinary people into multi-millionaires overnight, a lot of us have fantasized about winning this lottery at some point or another. Now, with the rise of online lottery casinos, players outside of the United States are able to buy tickets for Mega Millions. Read our full review of Mega Millions below to learn more about the rewards in store for this lottery’s extremely lucky winners, and to discover where you may get your hands on a couple of tickets!

MegaMillions lottery rules, payouts and odds

Mega Millions started in the United States back in 1996 and was initially known as the Big Game. In this lottery, 5 main numbers are chosen from a set of 1 to 75, as well as one Mega Ball from 25. Payouts range from the jackpot amount to as little as 2 dollars, and are fixed payouts that are split up as follows:

            Matches                                  Odds                       Prize

  • 5 numbers plus Mega Ball    1:302,575,350         Jackpot
  • 4 numbers                               1:12,607,306          $1 million
  • 4 numbers plus Mega Ball    1: 931,001              $10,000
  • 4 numbers                               1:38,792                 $500.00
  • 3 numbers plus Mega Ball     1:14,547                $200.00
  • 2 numbers plus Mega Ball     1: 693                    $10.00
  • 3 numbers                                1 in 606                 $10.00
  • 1 number plus Mega Ball       1:89                       $4.00
  • Only Mega Ball                        1:36                        $2.00

In October 2017, there were some changes to the Mega Millions lottery rules, whereby the minimum jackpot amount has more than doubled to $40 million (the equivalent of approximately £30 million), in order to equal the minimum jackpot for the Powerball lottery, another world-famous US lottery. The chances of winning this amount have unfortunately decreased, however, the odds of winning the 2nd prize that's set at a minimum of $1 million have increased from 1 in 18 million to 1 in 12 million!

If this sounds like the kind of lottery you dare to dream about (and why shouldn't you?), then make sure you buy your ticket for the next Mega Millions lottery; draws take place every Wednesday and Saturday at 05:00 CET.

Play Boosterball for better chances of winning!

In order to add some extra excitement while playing Mega Millions, you can also choose to play the Booster Ball, which shall multiply your chances of winning! All you have to do is press the Boosterball button below every ticket in order for 3 of its numbers to be selected, and use the Boost’o’Meter slider to bet from €1 up to €10. If your 3 numbers end up being called in the draw, you win 1,000x your stake, which would result in a payout of between €1,000 and €10,000!

Mega Millions jackpot, highest win and ticket price

The highest jackpot that’s been paid out in a Mega Millions lottery amounted to $656 million in March 2012 and was split between 3 winners from different states. There is no rollover cap for the jackpot, which means that it keeps increasing until it is won, and could even amount to a billion dollars! However, since October 2017, the odds of winning this jackpot have decreased, and are now 1: 302,575,350.

Tickets for this massive lottery can be purchased for €4.00 at one of our recommended online lottery casinos.

Mega Millions lottery - our conclusion

Together with its 'rival' lottery PowerBall, Mega Millions has paid out some of the biggest prizes in the history of lotteries, and with the recent changes in rules, its minimum jackpot has increased to a whopping $40 million! We were sad to learn that the chances of winning the jackpot have got slimmer, but it's worth keeping in mind that the 2nd prize also turns the winner into a millionaire! But ultimately, we're delighted that UK players can now participate in this American lottery through one of the online lottery sites, since we believe that despite the odds, it's certainly a lottery worth participating in!
