What kind of game is Dota 2?

Dota 2 is a popular esports game of the MOBA type (multiplayer online battle arena). In this game, two 5-player teams face each other with the aim of destroying their opponent’s base. Every player will choose a ‘hero’ at the start of the game, which he will control (there are over 100 heroes in this game). Heroes start from level one and progress to level 25. The more levels reached by a hero, the more skills he will develop, so that he’ll grow stronger and more capable of defeating opponents. Players will then earn money and points by killing minions on the game map and by killing the opponents’ heroes.

Dota 2 features regular updates and players can pay to unlock more features which will help them win (although the core content of the game, including all 100 heroes, is available to all players). Due to the abundance of items one can encounter, no two games of Dota 2 will be the same, and the game therefore gives players the opportunity to play it according to their own strategy and style.

What does Dota 2 – the International involve?

The International is simply an esports tournament based on Dota 2, played by top teams from around the world. The Group Stage will take place from the 15th until the 18th of August 2018, following which the top four teams in every group will progress to the Upper Bracket. Five to eight teams will then advance to the Lower Bracket, whereas the last team in each group will be eliminated.

The Main Event will then take place between the 20th and the 25th of August 2018. 16 teams will battle during a double elimination playoff. If a team in the Upper Bracket doesn’t play well, it will be relegated to the Lower Bracket, and will still have a chance of advancing to the Upper Bracket again, and on to the final. But if a team loses while playing in the Lower Bracket, this team will be eliminated from the tournament completely. Below is the Main Event Bracket structure, taken from Liquipedia.
